Voxer: Rebranding Case Study
Product | UI/UX Design | Brand Design
BACKGROUND
Voxer is a walkie-talkie application. The app features a live push-to-talk system and a voice messaging system that allows users to talk one-on-one with other users. Users can also listen to recorded messages, send photos, and use a location feature to see the location of other users on a map.
CHALLENGE
As the voice messaging market continues to evolve, and the competition is incredible strong. How might we rebrand the Voxer experience to establish it as the go-to walkie talkie application? How might we innovate for the future of voice messaging app beyond the fundamental requirement of voice communication?
SOLUTIONS
I transformed Voxer’s identity and key experiences to showcase an evolved lifestyle brand image. Using the new logo design, color palette, and bold imagery. I crafted a unique digital user experience, as well as adding new unique features, which drive recognition for Voxer.

DESIGN COMPARISON
I started brainstorming my ideas for wireframes by sketching them on paper. This process allowed me to lay out what I have in mind so that I can turn them into mockups and high-quality prototypes. In these sketches, you can see how I initially approached the design for each user flow.
PAPER FIRST
I then brought my ideas from sketches into interactive lo-fidelity prototypes and brought them to 3 potential users to collect feedback and improvement.
FROM PAPER TO DIGITAL
Task 1: Create community page and send broadcast message
Task 2: GPS Location
USER TESTING
I conducted user testing sessions on 3 participants. I assigned each task to the 3 users so I could gather feedback and responses that they had.
Task 3: Preview voice message

CONCLUSION
The location pin icon needs to be added so that users can choose the pinned location to send to others.
Add a map under the Share Location so that the users can use the pin to select the location.
The Share Location section needs to be bigger.
The design of the record button might need to be redesigned.
Add a heart/favorite icon on the chat page.
The preview button needs to be bigger so it’s easier to press and listen to what was recorded.
Show the status feature under the name on the chat page.
LO-FIDELITY
Based on the user testing, I gathered the comments and feedbacks from users for improvements. I continued working, and improve on my previous design. I also created another iteration of the design captured by the following lo-fidelity prototypes.
DESIGN CHANGES
I made 3 major design changes based on the user feedbacks.
1. Community page and broadcast feature
I added the community feature where it brings members and groups together. Inside the community group, admins can create sub-groups where members in the community can join to stay connected and discuss the related topics with others.
Admins of the community group can send broadcast messages in bulk to keep everyone updated about the related topics.
Members of the group can receive updates, get notifications of broadcast messages that are sent to entire community, and react or reply to the announcement.
Admins can remove or add more sub-groups to the community.
2. GPS tracking
Users can request location of other users.
Users can turn on their current location so that other users can see their real-time location and status.
Users can choose a pinned location to send.
3. Preview feature for voice messages
I added the voice message preview to help users review their message first before sending it. This helps with the mistake of accidentally holding and releasing the voice recording button.
I have added 3 new features to Voxer- light/ dark mode, disappearing mode, and AI Assistance. Having these features will attract more users and allow us to compete with other competitors in the market.
